DMK General Secretary K Anbhazhagan said the meeting would discuss about the 'oppressive regime' of the Jayalalithaa government.

Chennai: Condemning the detention of its senior leader and former minister Veerapandi S Arumugam under the stringent Goondas Act, DMK on Monday convened an emergent meeting of its Executive Committee for June 22 to discuss the 'oppressive regime' of Jayalalithaa Government in Tamil Nadu.

In a party release, DMK General Secretary K Anbhazhagan said the meeting, to be chaired by party President M Karunanidhi at the headquarters in Chennai, would discuss about the "oppressive regime" of the Jayalalithaa Government.

In another statement, the party slammed Jayalalithaa for committing an "atrocity" by invoking the Goondas Act against Arumugam, DMK's Salem District Secretary and arresting Madurai district secretary Thalapathi in a fresh case soon after he obtained bail in another case.

Arumugam, arrested on June 4 in connection with vandalism targeting hutment dwellers in a colony in Salem, was on Monday detained under the Goondas Act.

Stating that DMK would no longer tolerate such 'repressive' measures, the release said the executive committee meeting, would decide the party's protest against the Jayalalithaa regime.
