Kolkata: In a big blow to Mamata Banerjee’s efforts to expand the Trinamool Congress’ presence nationally, her once close aide and former Faridkot MP Jagmeet Singh Brar resigned as the party’s Punjab unit president on Saturday.
Speaking to News18 over telephone, he said that he had resigned because Mamata was too preoccupied with Bengal. He handed over his resignation letter to Mamata personally.
“I know Mamata ji since our days in students’ politics. I accepted her offer to become the Punjab TMC President in 2016 to make a strong base in the northern parts of India. But it is unfortunate that she is too occupied with Bengal and the party seems does not seem to be interested to in the national level,” he said.
He said that he had called Mamata last week and met her at her Kalighat residence. “I offered my resignation letter. I wanted her to lead the opposition front, but unfortunately it could not happen,” he said.
“For the last few weeks I felt that the TMC is not interested in expanding base in Punjab and other parts. Then Mukul Roy also resigned. This gave me the feeling that Mamata ji is too occupied and I decided to leave the party,” he said.
While handing over his resignation letter, Brar thanked Mamata for giving him the opportunity to serve the people in Punjab. “In the coming few days, I will consult my friends and well-wishers across Punjab to decide future course of action,” his resignation letter reads.
In 1999 Lok Sabha elections, Brar defeated the former Union Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal. He was the general secretary of AICC from 2010 to 2013.
