Kolkata: Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Saugata Roy on Tuesday requested Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan to revoke the suspension of six Congress MPs, including Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, suspended on the disciplinary ground on Monday.
Roy’s statement came days after TMC Chief Mamata Banerjee’s tried to out to Congress, saying, "Sonia Ji (Sonia Gandhi), Bengal is with you." Calling for a grand alliance to oust BJP from power, she announced that Bengal is with Soniaji, and roared to launch ‘BJP Bharat Chhoro’ abhiyan from August 9 to August 30.
Roy said, “Today is a very important day in the country. The new President has taken the oath. Your kindness is on test here. Mallikarjun Kharge has already said that you are a kind-hearted lady and it is your intention to run the House properly. Nobody says that throwing papers at the Speaker is approvable. You have taken action as per Rule 374 (A); there is a provision in this rule which mandates that even after MPs have been named and suspended for five days, the decision can be withdrawn at any time.”
He said, “I appeal to you and request you to please reconsider your decision. These young people may have been carried away by emotion and done something. The House is with you, we want you to run the House. I will also request Mr Ananth Kumar (Parliamentary Affairs Minister) to come forward and move the Motion for revoking the suspension. We are celebrating the swearing-in of a new President; we must show that we are broad-hearted and have the power to accommodate, so that the House can henceforth run peacefully.”
On Monday, six Congress MPs - Gaurav Gogoi, K Suresh, Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, Ranjeet Ranjan, Sushmita Dev and MK Raghavan - were suspended for causing disturbance in the house by storming the Well and tearing and throwing paper, demanding to speak on the growing incidents of mob lynching by cow vigilantes in India.
Meanwhile, state Congress leaders claimed that the TMC’s sudden romance with the Congress is purely a political move considering BJP’s huge popularity in India and keeping the 2019 Lok Sabha polls in mind. “We don’t trust Mamata. She is doing this for her political gains. Congress leaders should not fall in to TMC’s trap, otherwise the state Congress will be divided,” a senior Congress leader in Kolkata said.
Ever since BJP managed to make its firm foot in Bengal and in other parts of the country, Mamata is desperate for a grand alliance to take on BJP in the coming Lok Sabha elections in 2019.
