New Delhi: After the uproar due to absence of Rajya Sabha MP Sachin Tendulkar in the Upper House, the former cricketer responded to the controversy on Friday in a press conference.

Responding to questions Sachin said, "My absence in Delhi has been discussed too much. I do not mean to disrespect any institution, there was medical emergency in the family which I did not want to disclose. My absence in Delhi was due to my brother who had to undergo by pass surgery."

Earlier on Friday, the absence of cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar and actor Rekha in Rajya Sabha created an uproar yet again in the House. Addressing the House over the issue, Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman PJ Kurien said that action can be taken against members only if they have remained absent for at least 60 days. "Both Sachin and Rekha are yet to cross that threshold," Kurien said.

Senior Congress leader Rajeev Shukla reiterated that he had spoken to both the MPs and they have promised that he will attend more sessions regularly. He was nominated to Rajya Sabha in 2012. According to records, Tendulkar has only 3 per cent attendance in 2013, having attended Parliament only three times. Both the leaders have attended a single session of Rajya Sabha in 2014.

"This is a privilege, a responsibility. It is not a good practice, they should attend the House proceedings. Membership of Parliament is not a trophy, Sachin should come to Parliament," veteran lyricist Javed Akhtar said.
