Supreme Court pulls up Centre on Ganga cleaning, Union Minister Uma Bharti says process will take time
We have done our preparations and in some years you will get clean Ganga, Uma Bharti said.

New Delhi: Ganga Rejuvenation Minister Uma Bharti on Wednesday said cleaning of Ganga will take time. She also said her ministry has asked for report from Uttar Pradesh government on 100 bodies found in the river.

"You all expect to clean Ganga in six months something which could not be done in the last many years. This is unfair. Cleanliness process will take time," she said.

However, she said she would not like to comment on observations made by the Supreme Court on the Ganga river on Wednesday. "We will never play with the sentiments of people or the nature. We have done our preparations and in some years you will get clean Ganga," she said.

The Supreme Court on Wednesday pulled up the Centre on the issue of cleaning of the Ganges and asked for a status report on setting up of sewage treatment plants within six months. The apex court asked the Centre if it will be able to clean River Ganga in this term. It observed that over Rs 2000 crore has been spent in the last 30 years on cleaning of Ganga. The Supreme Court also inquired about the status of over 4000 sq km of area between Gaumukh and Uttarkashi which has to be declared as an eco-sensitive zone.

On over 100 bodies having been found in the Ganges in Unnao district, Bharti said the ministry has dispatched its teams for further investigation. "They will be reaching the spot and will be updating you. We have asked for the report from the state government," she said.

As per the state government report, Bharti said, some construction work of a bridge was going on. The dead bodies were seen after water level came down at one place. "I've asked my department for a detailed report," she said.

The Uttar Pradesh government ordered a probe after over 100 human corpses were found in the river Ganga posing a major environmental hazard. The dead bodies were found in a canal which connects Periyar Ghat to Ganga river in Unnao district. Reports said dogs and vultures were seen eating the flesh.
