In major drug bust cases in Punjab, leaders from the Congress, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the ruling Akali Dal, among several others, have been arrested for drug-related offences.
On July 1, the police arrested three persons including general secretary of the district unit of Congress with 1.2 kg of heroin. In another incident, Akali leader Mahal Singh Rana was arrested by Rajasthan Police with 7.5 kg of poppy husk on June 29. BJP leader Vijay Kumar Kamboj was also arrested by the Rajasthan Police for possessing and transporting 7.5 kg of poppy husk.
The Akali government has come under fire for the drug menace in the state.
Punjab Revenue Minister Bikram Singh Majithia came under the Enforcement Directorate scanner after he was named by a drug kingpin arrested by the police.
