Prime Minister Narendra Modi is still flying high as he completes one year in office but his Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) faces tough elections in Bihar, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal and Kerala in the next one year.
The BJP-led National Democratic Alliance government in its first year in office has got the thumbs up from 72% of those surveyed and Modi is seen as a fast and effective Prime Minister by more than half of the respondents, according to a survey carried out by Axis-My India for IBN.
But the big test for the BJP and Modi will be in the poll bound states of Bihar, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu and Kerala in the next one year. BJP President Amit Shah's army is staring at a year of tough battles in thses states.
Over 60% of those surveyed in Bihar, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal and Kerala say they are satisfied with the Modi government but Delhi where the BJP was wiped out by the Aam Aadmi Party just a few months back plays the spoiler with only 37% saying they are satisfied with the Central government and 56% replying in the negative.
In another big endorsement over half of those surveyed in Bihar, Tamil Nadu and West Bengal find Modi a fast and effective Prime Minister. In 75% of the respondents in West Bengal, which is the bastion of Trinamool Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee, reply in the affirmative when asked if Modi has been fast and effection during his first year in power.
Kerala scores the lowest but even there 48% respondents back Modi while in Delhi it is 52%.
But one fifth of those surveyed in Bihar feel Modi talks more than he works although the percentage is much lower in West Bengal, Tamil Nadu and Kerala.
In Tamil Nadu and West Bengal, just 7% and 4% respectively feel Modi talks more than he works. It is 13% each in Kerala and Delhi.
In Bihar 52% feel their economic condition has improved while 43% say it has remained unchanged. In Tamil Nadu, 60% feel it has improved while one third say there has been no change.
The situation is reversed in Mamata's West Bengal with just 36% feeling their condition has improved while it is a resounding yes in Kerala where 74% say they are now better off. Just 44% in Delhi agree their condition has improved.
But Modi faces a big test in controlling price rise. According to the survey 60% in Bihar feel prices have risen while 62% in Tamil Nadu hold the same view. In West Bengal 74% raise the red flag on inflation while in Kerala 42% feel prices have risen. But the situation reverses in Delhi with just 19% feeling prices have risen.
The methodology:
This is the biggest opinion poll ever carried out in India.
Over 20,000 respondents were polled in 153 districts covering 23 states, Out of them 69% are rural respondents and 31% are urban while 61% of those covered are male, 39% are female.
More than half of those surveyed almost 54% are in the 18-35 age group, 28% are between the ages of 36 and 50 and 18% are over the age of 50.
The states where the survey was carried out are Delhi, Haryana, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, J&K, Bihar, Odisha, Jharkhand, West Bengal, Assam, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Kerala, Meghalaya and Uttarakhand.
