No proof of Karkare calling Digvijaya: Maha govt
Maharashtra Home Minister says Karkare was killed by Pakistani terrorists on November 26, 2008.

Mumbai: The Maharashtra government has contradicted Congress General Secretary Digvijaya Singh's claim that slain Maharahstra ATS chief Hemant Karkare had called him just a few hours before the November 26, 2008 terror attacks in Mumbai.

Maharashtra Home Minister RR Patil told state Assembly on Thursday that there was no evidence of Karkare calling Digvijaya.

"There is no evidence of telephonic conversation between Digvijaya singh and slain police officer Hemant Karkare. This is Digvijaya Singh's personal statement," Patil said in Maharashtra Assembly.

Patil said Karkare was killed by Pakistani terrorists who had attacked Mumbai on November 26, 2008.

Digvijaya had created a flutter by stating that Karkare was under threat from right-wing groups and has been insisting that he had spoken to the police officer a few hours before the 26/11 attacks in Mumbai in 2008.

The Congress leader has claimed that Karkare reportedly told him that he (Karkare) faced threat from those opposed to the Malegaon blast investigations which had unearthed Hindu terror links. Karkare allegedly told him that his life was under constant threats.

However, Digvijaya has till now not been able to prove that he spoke to Karkare on November 26.
