The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government in Gujarat is facing the ire of Muslim clerics after posters were put up in Ahmedabad claiming that according to Quran, beef is bad for health. The posters were part of an anti-beef campaign in the state.
Posters from Gauseva and Gauchar Vikas Board of the Gujarat government have been put up in Ahmedabad. The billboards appeared in Bapunagar, greeting Muslims on the occasion of Janamashtami.
However, Muslim clerics have claimed that there is no such verse in Quran which says that beef is bad for health.
Former chairman Delhi Minorities Commission Kamal Farooqui also said that it is "very sad" that Quran is being quoted without any relevance. "It is highly objectionable. They don't have any right to misquote holy book. It's ridiculous," he said.
Gauseva and Gauchar Vikas Board is established for preservation, development and welfare of cow and its progeny.
The Gujarat government has said that having beef will cause diseases. After opposition from Muslim clerics, a clarification is yet to come.
