New Delhi: With days to go for the Gujarat elections, there is some embarrassment for Chief Minister Narendra Modi. Aam Admi Party leader Arvind Kejriwal has questioned his proximity to big business groups and raised uncomfortable questions about gas deals and favours to the Adani group in particular.
It's an old allegation against Narendra Modi that Arvind Kejriwal has now given renewed momentum to. Kejriwal focused on the 2002 gas deals with two companies Geo Global and Jubilant Enpro. He alleged that Modi favoured these companies and other corporates like the Adanis.
"The Modi government and Congress are hand in glove. Modi played safe by writing to the Centre demanding cancellation of the contract with Geo Global but the Centre didn't respond to it," Kejriwal said.
While Kejriwal targeted the Congress as well, what's interesting is Kejriwal's claim that it was anti-modi IPS officer Sanjiv Bhatt who gave him documentary evidence. Sanjiv's wife Shweta is the Congress's candidate against Modi. The BJP, meanwhile, hit back and strongly defended the Gujarat Chief Minister.
BJP leader Shahnawaz Hussain said, "These allegations themselves have been made since a CAG report questioned the gas deal. Even the congress raised the issue on Monday. But ironically it's come into focus only in election season."
While being the favourite of corporates is an accusation often made at Modi, the question is whether these allegations will have an impact on Gujarat's electorate.
