The BRS, after the drubbing in the recent Telangana assembly elections, now has the onerous task of motivating its workers for the upcoming Lok Sabha election.
The party has been holding a series of parliament constituency review meetings in which Sircilla MLA K Taraka Rama Rao has been exhorting cadre to learn from their mistakes and march ahead. He is also drumming up Telangana sentiments and is relying on the charisma of his father, former chief minister K Chandrasekhar Rao, to instil a fighting spirit among the workers.
At a recent meeting, KTR said: “The three letters ‘KCR’ are more powerful than the two letters ‘CM’. The former CM will be back in action from February.” KCR is recuperating from a hip replacement surgery.
KTR reminded people that BRS leaders fought in the agitation for a separate state for Telangana and they can show the same fighting spirit by being in the opposition. “Under KCR’s leadership, the TRS prioritises the aspirations of the people,” he said at a press conference.
The former IT minister has also been going back in history to drive home the point that the present Congress government is shaky. He is reminding the cadre that in the 1989 assembly elections, the Congress beat the TDP, but in the immediate Lok Sabha elections, the Grand Old Party faced defeat. “This pattern of broken promises and losing people’s mandate is deeply ingrained in the Congress,” he added.
He criticised the Congress government’s performance in one month, and alleged negligence in implementing poll promises made to SC, ST, BC, and other communities.
The party is also trying to get rid of its ‘inaccessible’ tag. One of the biggest complaints against the BRS was that it was full of arrogant leaders who were never present for the public. In a move to come closer to the masses, KTR visited the house of a bangle seller after the latter extended an invitation on the digital platform X. Former minister Harish Rao was seen interacting with Metro passengers a week ago.
In one of the meetings, KTR said the party concentrated entirely on administration and missed out on developing itself. He added that BRS will focus on strengthening the party at the grassroots level.
“Party state and district committees will be established, conducting comprehensive reviews every two to three months. Following present parliamentary reviews, detailed assessments of assembly constituencies would be undertaken,” the BRS leader said, talking about the party’s action plan for Lok Sabha polls.
In an earlier meeting, KTR had admitted that resentment against sitting MLAs did them in. He also mentioned that the party lost power because the sections which did not receive government assistance grew jealous of the sections that did.
