New Delhi: Forty five new night shelters are to be built in Delhi in the next 48 hours, government sources said on Wednesday. It's a CNN-IBN impact for the New Year as it highlighted tthe plight of the homeless earlier this week.

The move comes as a respite for those who depend on night shelters. There are thousands still however who remain homeless.

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal had promised to take action and help those who have have been displaced by the railway demolition drive that left over 175 families homeless.

"Manish Sisodia went there yesterday. If tents haven't been put up, we will arrange it tomorrow," Kejriwal had said assuring people that the Delhi government will extend all possible help to the displaced people.

Just a day before AAP ministers took oath in the iconic Ramlila Maidan in Delhi, over 175 hutments were demolished by the Railways on its land in East Delhi's Mansrovar park, leaving 900 people homeless in the bitter cold.

Even though Lt Governor Najeeb Jung had asked Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board to ensure rehabilitation of these people, the board says they are short of facilities. "We can't immediately build night shelters like these. That permission is not there but we will think what best can be done but population is too big," said Bhupinder Singh, Chief Engineer, DUSIB on accommodating the displaced people.
