Five members of a family, who were trapped under debris following a landslide after heavy rainfall in Kerala’s Idukki district, were found dead, officials said on Monday. The incident happened on Sunday night. The bodies of the family of Soman, his mother, wife, their daughter and her son have been removed from the debris.
Soman, a rubber tapper, was living with his family in a house near a hillock. On Sunday, a heavy downpour led to collapse of a portion of the land mass which fell over his small house.

Rescue forces led by the NDRF, police and locals located the bodies.
In Karnataka, highways were inundated and schools and colleges declared a holiday as heavy downpour continued to pound the state on Monday.
Union minister Jyotiraditya Scindia has visited the flood affected Gwalior-Chambal region of Madhya Pradesh and discussed about the situation and relief measures with Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan. Scindia, who hails from Gwalior and is a parliamentarian from Madhya Pradesh, toured the flood-hit areas over the last few days and met some of the affected people. He arrived in state capital Bhopal on Sunday evening.
Madhya Pradesh witnessed heavy rains last week, causing flooding in parts of the state. Talking to reporters on Sunday evening before leaving for Delhi, Scindia said people facing the rain fury were also affected by flooded rivers and this compounded their problems, especially in low-lying areas.
Rain Forecast
The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) on Sunday forecast heavy rain for the next few days in several parts of the country. According to IMD, fairly widespread or moderate rainfall with thunderstorm and lightning is very likely over Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura on Monday.
The weather department had earlier predicted that that Pune is likely to witness cloudy skies with light rainfall till August 31.
Bihar and eastern Uttar Pradesh are likely to see fairly widespread or widespread light to moderate rainfall with isolated heavy falls & thunderstorm, lightning on August 29, as per the IMD.
“Fairly widespread/widespread light/moderate rainfall with isolated heavy falls and thunderstorm/lightning very likely over Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand on 28th & 29th August, 2022,” the IMD said in a series of tweets.
Light to moderate widespread rainfall is also likely to occur in the sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim over the next four days.
In the southern part of India, North Interior Karnataka, Telangana, and Rayalaseema are likely to receive fairly widespread or widespread light to moderate rainfall with isolated heavy falls & thunderstorm, lightning from August 28 to 30, the weather department said.

Similar conditions have been predicted in coastal Andhra Pradesh today and in interior Karnataka till August 31.
Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Mahe, coastal Karnataka will all see fairly widespread or widespread light to moderate rainfall with isolated heavy falls & thunderstorm, lightning over the next five days, the IMD said on Sunday.
