RRTS Inaugurated: Delhi-Ghaziabad Done, Next Destination is Meerut South, Work to Be Completed in 6 Months
RRTS Inaugurated: The now-inaugurated 17-km stretch covers five stations in Ghaziabad. The next stretch with stoppage in Meerut South will finally connect Ghaziabad and Meerut and cover the distance in less than an hour

While Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday inaugurated the 17-km stretch of the Delhi-Meerut Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) between Sahibabad and Duhai Depot in Ghaziabad, the next section that will be opened to public will be the 25-km stretch between Duhai and Meerut South, officials aware of the matter told News18.

The now-inaugurated 17-km stretch covers five stations – Sahibabad, Ghaziabad, Guldhar, Duhai and Duhai Depot. The next 25-km distance will cover Muradnagar, Modinagar (South), Modinagar (North) and Meerut South.

While the first priority section is in Ghaziabad only, the next stretch with stoppage in Meerut South will finally connect Ghaziabad and Meerut with RRTS, as per the plans of the National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC), the agency building the RRTS.

“The work on the second section of RRTS between Duhai to Meerut (South) is underway and is expected to be completed in the next six months. Once it is ready, it will be opened to public," NCRTC CPRO Puneet Vats told News18.

The complete sections with 16 stoppages between Modipuram Depot in Meerut and Jangpura in Delhi will be ready by 2025. Of the total length of 82 km, Uttar Pradesh accounts for 68 km.

The commuter service has eight stations in Ghaziabad, and four each in Meerut and Delhi. While RRTS operations between Meerut and Ghaziabad can be expected in the next six months, the section connecting Delhi may take some time.

The RRTS will enter Delhi from Anand Vihar, which will be the next stop after Sahibabad. In Delhi, RRTS will have stoppages at New Ashok Nagar, Sarai Kale Khan and Jangpura.

Once the full stretch is completed, the distance between Meerut and the national capital can be covered in less than one hour. It will not ease only the life of daily commuters, but also help in controlling air pollution. The service is expected to take more than one lakh private vehicles off the road.
