Rohit Sharma became the seventh Indian captain to lead the Men in Blue in 100 or more games, joining the likes of Kapil Dev, Virat Kohli, and MS Dhoni among others.

Indian captain Rohit Sharma etched his name in the history books as the ‘Hitman’ joined the likes of MS Dhoni, Virat Kohli and Kapil Dev among others to captain the Men in Blue in 100 matches.

Leading the Indian team against England in Lucknow at the Ekana Stadium during the World Cup clash, Rohit entered the historic ‘100 club’ as he marked his 100th appearance as the leader of the pack. The 36-year-old joined an illustrious list of former captains, becoming the seventh only Indian skipper to lead the side in over 100 games.

To put this massive feat into perspective, legendary names such as Sachin Tendulkar led India in only 98 games, while Sunil Gavaskar was the leader of the team in 84 matches. Rohit Sharma though joined the likes of Kapil Dev, MS Dhoni, Virat Kohli, Saurav Ganguly, Rahul Dravid, and Mohammed Azharuddin.

Infact, the ‘Hitman’ is the most successful captain of the Indian team, having a win percentage of 73.73 while leading the Men in Blue in international matches. Furthermore, Dhoni has the most appearances as the Indian captain, the legendary wicketkeeper batter led India in 323 matches in international cricket. He is also the only captain in the world to have won all three ICC trophies, the ODI World Cup in 2011, the T20 World Cup in 2007 and the Champions Trophy in 2013.

In his 323 matches, Dhoni led India to 178 victories, while the Men in Blue lost 120 games under his leadership. After Dhoni, Azharuddin is the second highest among most appearances as Indian captain.

The Hyderabad stalwart led the national team in 221 matches, whereas, Kohli has led the Indian team in 213 matches. Under Virat’s captaincy, the Men in Blue won 135 matches, losing 60 games.

Ahead of the World Cup fixture against England, Rohit Sharma had led the Indian team to 73 wins while they have faced 23 defeats and two games finished without a result.

The Nagpur-born opener marked his iconic 100th game as India’s captain with a true leader’s knock, smashing a fifty as India slumped to 40/3 at one stage but the Hitman kept the scoreboard ticking, joining hands with KL Rahul to help steady the ship.
