PhonePe, the popular Walmart-backed digital payments app, is going to open up its app store to developers soon, as reported by Moneycontrol. This move is said to challenge the Google Play Store and subsequently its monopoly in mobile app distribution on Android.
This move could happen as soon as today, September 23.
“Called Indus Appstore, the mobile app marketplace will be inviting developers to publish their app on the platform, and will charge a zero percent fee on in-app purchases,” Moneycontrol reported. And for context, Google and Apple—in contrast—charge a commission of 15-30% on all in-app transactions and app sales from the developers.
Another stark contrast would be having 24×7 India-based support for developers as this is a major cause of concern for app developers with other competing platforms.
In addition, with better focus towards operating in India, the ‘Indus Appstore’ will allow developers to publish their apps in 12 Indian languages, and will let developers add media content such as supporting videos and images while listing their apps in the same languages.
In the recent past, both Apple and Google have been under fire for taking a big cut of app sales on their platforms. This has led to some major conflicts—like the Apple vs. Epic legal battle. However, it’s important to note that Apple currently does not permit third parties to list their own app stores on iOS or iPadOS.
