Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is struggling in popularity much behind his main challenger Pierre Poilievre and the Conservatives led by the latter could form the next majority government in the state if an election was held today, according to the latest opinion poll done by the Global News.

The Canadian media organisation put out the results of its poll earlier today, saying four out of 10 Canadians say Poilievre was the best choice for PM and that 60% of Canadians think it’s time for Trudeau to step aside as leader and let someone else lead the Liberals into the next election in 2025. The survey findings are as of September 21 and 1500 respondents.

Top government sources in India said this seemed to be the real reason for Trudeau opening a front against India amidst his dipping popularity amongst Canadians. Trudeau has so far not furnished any evidence to prove India’s involvement in the killing of a Khalistani separatist leader in Canada. India on Thursday said no evidence had been provided to it either.

India has rubbished the allegations, with sources linking it to problems Trudeau faces domestically, like high inflation and increasing cost of living.

The poll done by ISPOS for Global News shows 40% of the respondents surveyed by the agency preferring Poilievre as the PM against 31% for Trudeau and 22% for Jagmeet Singh. While Poilievre’s ratings went up by 5 points from a survey done a year ago, Trudeau’s ratings have remained static while those of Singh dropped by four points, the new report said.

Global News said the poll was conducted between September 15 and 18, with 1,500 respondents surveyed. “When you take a look at why Canadians are feeling the way they are right now, [there’s] real dissatisfaction with the direction of the country. Particularly, when it concerns the big issues that are on their personal agendas,” ISPOS CEO Darrell Bricker was quoted by the Global News report, citing cost of living, access to housing and inflation.
