Over the years, Shakti Kapoor has essayed quite many zany characters in his career. However, one that remains prominent is the character of Crime Master Gogo from Rajkumar Santoshi’s cult classic Andaz Apna Apna featuring Aamir Khan, Salman Khan, Raveena Tandon, and Karishma Kapoor. However, it was only recently when Shakti Kapoor revealed that another actor was the first choice for ‘Crime Master Gogo’.
Speaking with Digital Commentary, Shakti Kapoor recalled how he came on board for the role, “Nearly 70 per cent of the filming had already been completed. Though I wanted to work with Santoshi and the movie’s producer was my friend, I expressed concerns about starting the filming in three days, citing date issues. Despite this, they persistently requested my involvement. In response, I suggested a compromise, proposing that we could shoot my scenes during the night if the other stars were fine with this arrangement.”
He continued, “Then I reached out to Tinnu, asking if he was okay with me playing the role instead of him. He is a very good friend of mine and I wouldn’t have assumed the part without his permission. Fortunately, he had no reservations.”
Shakti Kapoor also recounted an incident when Aamir Khan bumped into him at an International airport and told him that he was looking for Crime Master Gogo’s t-shirt, “I was surprised to learn that t-shirts featuring the character had been created. My son swiftly located one at the airport and gifted it to Aamir. The next time I saw Aamir at a party, he was proudly sporting that t-shirt. It was then that I learned that Crime Master Gogo toys were being sold, and there were even stalls named Crime Master Momos,” he stated.
The Salman Khan and Aamir Khan starrer film Andaz Apna Apna was released in 1994. This film also did not impress the audience in theatres much. The movie was declared a flop as soon as it was released. However, when Andaz Apna Apna premiered on TV, people liked it very much. Also, within no time, this movie became one of the cult classics.
