In a shocking case of theft from a checked-in bag at Mumbai airport, a person lost Rs 1 lakh in cash and a 78-year-old fountain pen on Wednesday. The 46-year-old flyer, a director with a Manipal Group company, Mangaluru to Mumbai when the incident took place.
Binod Kumar Mandal, who suspected that the airport employees could be behind the theft, said he had to wait for almost five hours in Mumbai to lodge a police complaint.
According to a TOI report, Mandal said after landing at the domestic terminal, he found his bag’s number lock and the zip had been tampered with. He was carrying the cash for emergency on a 2-day official trip and had kept it safely in the bag.
“The fountain pen, valued at Rs 5,000, was a family heirloom… a gift from my grandfather who had bought it in 1946,” he was quoted by TOI as saying.
“I am from Kolkata but have been working in Mangaluru with Manipal Tech Group Companies,” he said, adding that authorities test the patients of people who go to them with such complaints “instead of solving their problems”.
“In my case, I had the proof of money that I had withdrawn from the bank that I carried with me,” he said.
Mandal said this is the first time he has experienced baggage theft although he is a frequent flyer.
“It is a hand in-glove act by people inside the airport, otherwise the theft would not have occurred I suspect that the person who does the baggage scanning would have tipped off the loader who would have stolen the cash at a place where there is no CCTV coverage,” he added.
Police have filed a case of theft against an unknown person.
