Amar Akbar Anthony, directed by Manmohan Desai in 1977, stands as one of the highest-grossing films of its time. The blockbuster commercial potboiler excelled in acting, direction, and other elements, contributing to its immense success. An intriguing anecdote associated with the film reveals that while actresses opposite Amitabh Bachchan and Rishi Kapoor were finalised, none were selected for Vinod Khanna’s role. Khanna, perturbed by this, persisted with the director until Shabana Azmi was eventually chosen to play opposite him, essaying the role of Laxmi. The film boasted a stellar cast including Parveen Babi, Neetu Singh, and Nirupa Roy, and reportedly grossed over Rs 7 crore at the box office.
Apart from that, another striking incident from the film came to light. Shabana Azmi, in interaction with Bollywood Hungama, shared, " I watched Amitabh giving 14 perfect takes of that famous drunken scene in Amar Akbar Anthony where he puts the plaster on his image in the mirror. He got it right each time, but it was difficult for the camera because it was complicated. Amitabh didn’t even express frustration for once. If you narrate this to a Hollywood star, he would faint."
Shabana Azmi revealed while shooting for this film, Manmohan Desai had to prepare for the climax for Parvarish. During his absence, Desai instructed Bachchan to rehearse the iconic drunken-mirror scene. Interestingly, Bachchan opted to shoot the scene with the assistance of the assistant director, showcasing his commitment to perfecting memorable sequences.
The music of Amar Akbar Anthony also left an indelible mark on the audience to date. One of the tracks from the film, titled Shirdi Wale Sai Baba, is a big hit. Mohammed Rafi provided his vocals to this track while Laxmikant Pyarelal composed it.
