Sunil Dutt was one of the legendary actors of the Indian film industry who entertained the audience with his brilliant acting prowess for decades. On March 11, 1958, Sunil Dutt married his Mother India co-star Nargis Dutt, who died on May 3, 1981. The actor was deeply disheartened by his wife’s demise and talked about how he deals with it in an interview with actress and talk-show host Tabassum. Sunil Dutt said,"Main kuchh keh nahi sakta iske baare me. Kya hai ki insaan sochta hai ki kisi ke jaane ke baad shayad wo jee nahi payega. Magar pata nahi kaise jee pate hain log (I can’t say anything on this matter. People think they can’t live after their loved ones die, but don’t know how, people continue living)." Sunil Dutt added that he used to think the same but now he is also living her loss. He added that the way his life is proceeding right now.

According to Sunil Dutt, he is often reminded of the song from Mother India which was lip-synced by Nargis. He was talking about the song Duniya Mein Hum Aaye Hain Toh Jeena Hi Padega. This song is from Mother India, directed by Mehboob Khan. This film is counted as one of the iconic films of Indian cinema. It starred Rajendra Kumar Tuli, Raaj Kumar, Kumkum, Mukri and others in important roles. Mother India is known to be one of the few feminist films produced during that era. The social drama film took us through the heart-wrenching tale of a mother and her struggles in a patriarchal society.

Sunil Dutt and Nargis’s love story

Sunil Dutt and Nargis’s love story started on the Mother India sets. While the film’s shooting was happening in Gujarat’s Surat city, an accident occurred during the shooting of a fire sequence. A pile of haystacks was kept on a field, which was to be burnt, and Nargis had to run through it. Things didn’t go as planned. When Nargis started running between the burning haystacks, the wind changed its direction abruptly. She was trapped inside the burning flames.

Sunil Dutt was soon to act in the same sequence with Nargis. He saw the incident and rushed to help the actress risking his own life. He jumped into the raging fire and carried the Mother India actress in his arms. He brought the actress out to safety. Writer TS George’s book has written about this incident in The Life and Times of Nargis. While trying to save Nargis from the fire, the actor was grievously injured. He faced serious burns and Nargis also sustained little burn injuries. Nargis soon turned to taking care of Sunil Dutt. This made her slowly fall in love with him.
