Govinda and Neelam Kothari starred in 14 movies back in the late 80s and 90s. The actor had made his debut alongside Neelam in 1986 and fans loved their chemistry. It was rumoured that the two were in love but Govinda was already married to Sunita. In an earlier interview, the actor had talked about how he would ask Sunita to be more like Neelam because he was smitten by her.
In an interview with Stardust dating back to 1990, Govinda talked about how enamored he was by his co-star – Neelam. He mentioned how he would talk about her to his family and friends. He also said that he would often ask Sunita to be like Neelam. The actor said, “I couldn’t stop praising her (Neelam). To my friends, to my family. Even to Sunita, to whom I was committed. I would tell Sunita to change herself and become like Neelam. I would tell her to learn from her. I was merciless. Sunita would get irritated. She would tell me, ‘You fell in love with me because of what I am, don’t ever try to change me’. But I was so confused. I didn’t know what to own.”
Govinda had also spoken about how he did not intend to get serious with Sunita. He continued, “At that point in time, I met Sunita. I admit that my involvement with her was a totally calculated move on my part. And I paid a heavy price for it.”
The actor married Sunita in 1987 but he kept it secret for four years. They have been married for 35 years now and have two children – Tina and Yashvardhan. He was last seen as a judge on a dance reality show. Neelam, on the other hand, had initially married Rishi Sethia in 2000. But they split soon after. She, later, married Samir Soni in 2011. They have been married for 13 years now and have a daughter together.
