‘Unfair’: Lijo Jose Pellissery On His Film Malaikottai Vaaliban’s Negative Reviews
The director revealed how some people dubbed it as the “worst Malayalam film ever.”

Lijo Jose Pellissery-directorial Malaikottai Vaaliban was released in theatres on January 25. Upon its release, the Mohanlal-starrer started facing criticism from audiences and the critics alike. The director expressed his thoughts on the situation recently and revealed that he was “hurt” with some extreme criticisms. The highly-anticipated Malayalam epic, Malaikottai Vaaliban, failed to resonate with the audience. It is being heavily criticised by the viewers. In an interview with a media portal, Lijo Jose Pellissery shared his feelings on the negative reception of the film. He revealed how some people dubbed it as the “worst Malayalam film ever.” He said, “When such an effort has been taken … I am not saying it should be celebrated … Criticisms are also totally welcome.” He continued saying that in the first two days of its release, the conversations on the film took a “totally wrong direction.” He said it is fine if people dislike the film, but feels that it is “unfair that some are discouraging others from watching it”. He said, “The comments that came out in the first two days sounded like, ‘I did not like it, so nobody in this country should watch it’ — that’s the attitude some had.”

He stated that this attitude diminished the work done by people for one and a half years, and the highlight was only “the worst Malayalam film ever made.” “That made me really sad. That’s why I stepped forward and addressed the media, which I had never done before, explaining why people should watch the film,” he said.

Lijo Jose Pellissery admitted that they could have released a better trailer, which would have provided more clarity on the film’s pace and what it explored.

Malaikottai Vaaliban starred Mohanlal in the lead, along with names like Sonalee Kulkarni, Hareesh Peradi, Danish Sait, Manoj Moses, Katha Nandi, and many others. It is produced by Shibu Baby John, Achu Baby John, Vikram Mehra, Siddharth Anand Kumar, M C Philip, and Jacob K Babu. Prashant Pillai has composed the music in the film, while Madhu Neelakandan has handled the cinematography.
