This 2015 Film Introduced Mainstream Audiences To Cliffhanger Endings And Kept Them Guessing For 2 Years
Made on a budget of Rs 165 crore, the first Baahubali film collected Rs 650 crore worldwide.

The duration between 2015 and 2017 was one filled with suspense and excitement for diehard cinephiles as the country pondered about just one thing, ‘Why did Katappa kill Baahubali’. This was the most well-kept secret for two years by the team of the magnum opus Baahubali, which was first released in 2015.

Cliffhanger endings were something that the desi audience was not accustomed to but SS Rajamouli brought cliffhanger endings to the mainstream with the shocking climax of Baahubali where we see Amarendra Baahubali’s most trusted confidante and ally Katappa kill him by stabbing him in the back.

The scene sent shockwaves across the country, and more so, since the film ended without showing the reason or providing a context as to why the hero’s ally would backstab him. The story was to continue in Baahubali: The Conclusion but it was two full years before the sequel was released in 2017. In these two years, the question ‘Why did Katappa kill Baahubali’ became something no less than an internet phenomenon, trending on all major social media sites, with memes being made on them. The answer was finally revealed in the sequel and audiences heaved a sigh of relief.

Made on a budget of Rs 165 crore, the first part made a collection of Rs 650 crore worldwide, becoming the most successful Telugu film ever. The record was beaten by its sequel which collected a whopping Rs 1810.5 crore, becoming the highest-grossing Telugu film ever and also the second highest-grossing Indian film ever, behind Aamir Khan’s Dangal.

The Baahubali films made Prabhas a pan-India star and also starred Rana Daggubati, Sathyaraj, Anushka Shetty, Ramya Krishnan, Nassar and Tammanaah Bhatia, among others.

The music was composed by Rajamouli’s frequent collaborator MM Keeravani. The film was dubbed in all the South Indian languages along with Hindi. Both the Baahubali films are available for streaming on Disney+Hotstar as well as Netflix.
