Veteran actress Shabana Azmi has reacted to the shocking Kolkata rape and murder case. Recently, the Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani actress attended an event in Pune when she called the RG Kar Hospital incident ‘extremely dangerous’. She mentioned that it’s high time to ‘dismantle patriarchy’ and stated that it is sad to see not a lot is changed since the 2012 Nirbhaya rape and murder case.
“Such incidents are extremely dangerous. It’s embarrassing to see that these kinds of heinous acts have not reduced despite the formation of Justice Verma Committee back in 2012 during the Nirbhaya case. We should not treat women as commodities… we need to dismantle patriarchy which is deep-rooted in us,” Shabana Azmi said as quoted by the news agency ANI.
Shabana Azmi is not the first actress who has expressed anger to the rape and murder case of a doctor in Kolkata. Previously, Kareena Kapoor Khan and Preity Zinta also reacted to the incident. “12 years later, the same story, the same protest. But we are still waiting for change,” Kareena wrote.
On the other hand, Preity Zinta also expressed anger and called the Kolkata rape and murder case “heartbreaking” and “disgusting”. She further mentioned that it was time to prioritize women’s safety and hoped for strict punishments for the accused.
Later, Samantha Ruth Prabhu also called for change and shared that women’s safety should be our priority. “It is the need of the hour and we are really looking forward to some change. It is the need of the hour. I hope the change comes really soon,” she said at an event in Mumbai.
Among others, Hrithik Roshan also demanded ‘harsh’ punishment for the accused and wrote on X, “Yes we need to evolve into a society where we ALL feel equally safe. But that is going to take decades. It’s going to hopefully happen with sensitizing and empowering our sons and daughters. The next generations will be better. We will get there. Eventually. But what in the interim? Right now justice would be to put a hard stop to such atrocities. And the only way to do that is a punishment so harsh that it scares the living daylights out of such perpetrators. That’s what we need. Perhaps?”
Alia Bhatt also expressed her outrage and wrote, “Another brutal rape. Another day of realisation that women are not safe, anywhere,” drawing a direct comparison to the Nirbhaya tragedy that shook India over a decade ago.
