Looking back on Rajinikanth's rise to India's one of the biggest superstars, it's impossible to ignore the wild frenzy of fans that the actor amassed, and continues to do so till date. The film frenzy reaches its peak every time a Rajini movie hits theatres. His latest offering 2.0 has once again triggered pandemonium across the country as it releases in cinemas today.

While the fans of Thalaiva have already declared the film a super duper hit on social media, movie critics also seemed to be highly impressed by the S Shankar's directorial. Known film critic Taran Adarsh has rated the film five stars and called it a "blockbuster". Bollywood Hungama's film critic Faridoon Shahryar has also heaped praise on the movie, writing, "It's a universal film which is relevant for the entire world."

The film, which is touted as the most expensive Indian project ever, is a sequel to the 2010 blockbuster Robot and marks Bollywood actor Akshay Kumar's Tamil debut. The film sees Akshay in the role of an antagonist, Dr Richard/Crowman, a cellphone-hating mutant scientist, while Rajini reprises his role as Dr Vaseegaran/Chitti from the original.

Trade analyst Akshay Rathi wrote that Shankar's vision did complete justice to the stardom of both the actors and kept their fans entertained throughout the film.

At Rs 543 crore, this Rajinikanth film is more expensive than several successful Hollywood VFX classics like Deadpool (USD 58 million), X-Men (USD 75 million) and Batman (USD 35 million).
