Designer and actress Masaba Gupta is preparing to embrace motherhood as she eagerly awaits the arrival of her first child. Recently, Masaba opened up about the challenges her mother, Neena Gupta, faced during her pregnancy.
In a candid conversation on Faye D’souza’s podcast, Masaba shared intimate details of the struggles Neena endured while pregnant with her. Reflecting on her mother’s experiences, she said, “When she was pregnant with me she didn’t have her mom around, her father was against it because it was out of wedlock. My father Viv Richards wasn’t around, and friends were around but it was not the same, everyone had their life. She couldn’t tell people that she was pregnant with me, so she had to hide her pregnancy. She didn’t have money. When I asked her how she managed through all of this, she just said, ‘I was very happy to have a child of my own. I had no clue how I would bring you up.’”
Masaba also opened up about her own experiences of being judged and labeled in school because of her background. Recalling the discrimination she faced, she said, “It was used against me 100 percent, it was public and it was very interesting because the kids would speak about it like adults. I could hear them repeating something they heard in their house. One kid went on to say, ‘Hey bas****, I believe you are a bastd child.’ This was when I was in the 7th grade. A lot of people also didn’t understand how I looked physically or why I looked like that.”
Masaba further elaborated on the body-shaming she encountered growing up due to her athletic physique as a tennis player. “There was a lot of catcalling from the boys about my body. I was a professional tennis player, so I had these broad shoulders and ripped arms and legs. I also developed very early, so I was not dainty, or feminine, so it was like where is this thing from? I was very happy in my own bubble in school, I did my own thing. I didn’t make great friends in school, which I regret, apart from 2-3 of them,” she added.
Masaba and her mother, Neena Gupta, gained immense popularity after starring together in the Netflix series Masaba Masaba, which has successfully run for two seasons. Last year, Masaba married her co-star Satydeep Misra, and the couple is excitedly awaiting the arrival of their first child next month.
