Actress Reese Witherspoon, known for her portrayal of Elle Woods in the iconic Legally Blonde series, is set to rekindle the magic of the franchise with a new television series. Witherspoon, who first brought Elle to life in 2001, returned for the sequel in 2003. Now, after more than two decades, fans eagerly anticipate her reprisal of the beloved character. While details about the new TV series remain under wraps, it’s known that Witherspoon’s Hello Sunshine production company is behind the project, reports Variety. The series, set to be a spinoff of the original film, is currently in development at Amazon MGM Studios.
The new show will be directed by Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage, known for their work on Gossip Girl, with Marc Platt, a producer of the Legally Blonde movies, also on board.
This latest venture into the Legally Blonde universe follows the 2009 release of Legally Blondes, a spinoff that followed the journey of Elle Woods’ younger cousins.
Initially announced in October 2020 with a planned May 2022 release, the project has encountered delays. Mindy Kaling, who was revealed as the writer for Legally Blonde 3, explained in a 2022 interview with Time that the delay was due to her other commitments. Despite the setback, Luke Wilson, who starred alongside Witherspoon in the first two films, remains optimistic about the project’s future.
“I don’t know. I was kidding around when Barbie was such a big hit, saying that Legally Blonde was the OG. But I really haven’t heard anything since then,” Wilson told ComicBook.com back in December. “We had a Zoom meeting of everyone, all the characters, and it was just kind of fun to see everybody… Reese is a very sharp person, so I think she really wants to get the perfect script, and I would bet they do get affected by Barbie being such a zeitgeist movie across not just the country but the world, so hopefully in a good way that’ll inspire them to get the best script that they can.”
While details about the new TV series continue to emerge, fans of Legally Blonde eagerly await Witherspoon’s potential return as Elle Woods.
