Veteran actor Prakash Raj’s versatility in acting needs no introduction but he also dominates the news because of his political and social stance. Not known to mince his words, Prakash Raj is one of the strongest critics of the present government. However, his personal life also does come under the limelight.
Prakash Raj divorced his first wife Lalitha Kumari in 2009 and married choreographer Pony Varma the next year itself. Recently, Tamil celebrity Jayanthi Kannappan discussed Prakash Raj’s divorce from Lalitha in an interview. Jayanthi commented on how Prakash Raj and Lalitha met, their marriage, and eventually, their divorce.
Lalitha Kumari is the younger sister of Tamil actress Disco Shanti, known for her item numbers in Tamil cinema. Jayanthi Kannappan said that Lalitha used to provide accommodation for struggling movie artists who came to Chennai from other states. Prakash Raj had arrived here from Karnataka and Lalitha helped him with finding accommodation. That is how they both met and eventually fell in love, according to Jayanthi.
Jayanthi added that the couple were having a happy married life with two daughters and one son when tragedy struck them. Their son Sidhu died at the age of 5 in 2004 when he fell off the terrace while flying a kite. Jayanthi further said that this tragic incident in their lives slowly caused an emotional distance between Prakash Raj and Lalitha. This was the time that Pony Varma entered the life of Prakash Raj.
Jayanthi also said that change in a person’s life is inevitable when one makes new contacts in the world of cinema. When Prakash Raj decided to get a divorce, Lalitha did not object. She stated that he is her husband and the father of their three children, and she would accept whatever decision he made. Even after their divorce, Prakash Raj continued to fulfil his responsibilities towards their children. Jayanthi mentioned that they have sent two of their children abroad. Prakash Raj and Poni Verma got married in 2010 and they have a son named Vedant.
