The Grammys, often regarded as one of the year’s most prestigious events, is no stranger to controversy, and this year is no exception. Various artists have consistently criticized the awards show and this year, Drake didn’t hold back. Just hours before the 2024 Grammys commenced at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, the artist, known for his outspoken views, took to Instagram to slam the ceremony. Despite being nominated for Album of the Year with Her Loss, the Canadian singer and rapper opted to skip the event, and instead, he chose to perform for his fans at a concert with J Cole in Tampa, Florida.
In a bold move, the artist not only condemned the event in his text but also shared a video from his 2019 Grammy acceptance speech and labelled the Grammys as just the opinions of a select group of individuals.
In his 2019 acceptance speech, the singer took a dig at the event, asserting that such award shows fail to accurately represent the genuine value of music. He highlighted that artists shouldn’t measure their success solely by the number of trophies they receive. Remaining true to his opinions, Drake took a stand by boycotting the awards show and chose not to submit his 2022 album Honestly, Nevermind for consideration. The Weeknd had also boycotted the 2023 Grammys after being snubbed in the nominations.
Along with the video from past Grammy, Drake wrote, “All you incredible artists remember this show isn’t the facts it’s just the opinion of a group of people who’s name are kept are secret (Literally you can Google it). Congrats to anybody winning anything for hip hop but this show doesn’t dictate shit in our world.”
Although Drake wasn’t present at the event, his collaborative track Her Loss with 21 Savage earned four Grammy nominations this year, in categories such as Best Rap Album, Best Rap Performance, Best Melodic Rap Performance and Best Rap Song. Despite the multiple nominations, the track faced disappointment as it failed to secure a win in any of the categories. This isn’t the first time the rapper has chosen to distance himself from the Grammys. In 2017, he skipped the event when his song Hotline Bling was listed as rap instead of pop. In 2022, he withdrew his nominations for the album Certified Lover Boy and the song Way 2 Sexy due to similar concerns.
The hip hop artist is currently busy with his ‘It’s All a Blur, Big As the What?’ tour which started at Ball Arena in Denver, US on January 18. The tour has taken him to various cities, including Oklahoma City, New Orleans, Nashville, St Louis, Columbus, Memphis and more. Drake is scheduled to conclude his tour on March 27 in Birmingham.
