Dheena gave Ajith Kumar the moniker of 'Thala'. The film re-released on the big screen on the occasion of his birthday.

Tamil actor Ajith Kumar celebrated his birthday on Wednesday, May 1. On the occasion, one of his old films, Dheena, was re-released and fans flocked to the theatres to watch it. In videos and photos surfacing on X, an iconic theatre in Chennai was seen packed with fans who were celebrating the superstar’s birthday. One of the videos revealed fans brought in crackers and were seen bursting it while the film played.

Dheena was originally released in 2001. The film marked director AR Murugadoss’ debut. Speaking about the film’s re-release, the filmmaker wrote on X, “Happy #MayDay to all the dedicated souls out there! Excited on the re-release of ‘Dheena’ today, a film close to my heart! Thank you Ajith sir for defining #Thala. Let’s celebrate ‘Dheena’ in theaters once again! #DheenaRerelease.”

The film also marked Malayalam actor Suresh Gopi’s debut in the Tamil film industry and Laila’s debut. The film also gave Ajith the nickname ‘Thala.’ The film, a Pongal release in 2001, was a massive success. The music and background score by Yuvan Shankar Raja continues to be popular among fans.

The director, on the occasion of Ajith’s birthday, wished him on X. “Wishing a very Happy Birthday to the one and only Ajith sir! . Here’s to your continued greatness and inspiring journey! #HappyBirthdayAK,” Murugadoss wished.

Meanwhile, Ajith is preparing to return to the big screen with Vidaa Muyarchi. The film is currently under production with Ajith filming with Trisha, Arjun Sarja, Regina Cassandra and Arav. Directed by Magizh Thirumeni, the upcoming thriller is expected to release in the second half of 2024. Interestingly, even at the age of 50, Kumar has fearlessly performed most of the daring stunts without using a body double.

Ajith also has Good Bad Ugly in the making. The film marks actor’s 63rd film. Mythri Movie Makers announced the film last year. While the film will be directed by Adhik Ravichandran, Devi Sri Prasad is onboard the project for the music. Good Bad Ugly is set to go on floors in June 2024 and will release in theatres during the special occasion of Pongal 2025.
