Aishwariya Rajinikanth’s directorial Laal Salaam has grossed just Rs 15.7 crore in 9 days. The film failed to live up to expectations despite the inclusion of Rajinikanth in the project. Lal Salaam was released on February 9. Rajinikanth played the role of Moideen Bhai in this film. AR Rahman had composed the music for the film. According to sacnilk.com, the movie brought in even less than a crore on its 10th day. The movie’s box office collections were Rs 0.41 crore on its tenth day.
In Lal Salaam, Aishwarya tried to show how the Hindu-Islamic conflict is fueled by some anti-social elements with a cricket tournament in the background and how important religious harmony is. Despite the social commentary as well as some positive reviews, Laal Salaam has failed to pique the interest of people.
Lal Salaam was released in Telugu in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. The film was not well received in both the states. The very first show on the first day was cancelled without an audience in many places. Even in Tamil Nadu, occupancy was quite poor. Reports say that no OTT platform was initially willing to purchase the streaming rights of the film due to the poor box office performance.
Some unconfirmed reports circulated that Netflix had obtained the digital streaming rights and Sun TV had purchased the satellite rights. There are rumours about a possible Netflix premiere around the first week of March, although official confirmation is not yet available.
Normally, there is a substantial time gap between a film’s theatrical debut and OTT streaming date but since Laal Salaam is expected to move out of theatres by next week, one can expect an OTT debut in the first week of March.
