A three-story creative hub set to open in north Jeddah in 2019 aims to become the home of arts, comedy, theater and filmmaking in Saudi Arabia.

Hayy: Creative Hub, whose name comes from the Arabic word for neighborhood, was announced by Art Jameel, whose other venues include the soon-to-open Jameel Arts Centre project in Dubai, and continues the non-profit foundation's goal of promoting arts and heritage in the Middle East.

Construction began late last year on the 17,000-square-meter complex, which will house 12 cultural organizations, three exhibitions, a theater, event spaces and artists' studios. While Art Jameel first announced that it was breaking ground last July, its latest announcement includes further details on the architectural design and plans for the complex.

Dubai-based Ibda Design has taken on the design of the venue, imagining it as a three-story complex featuring inner courtyards surrounded by shaded terraces and walkways, typical of traditional Middle Eastern architecture and meant to maximize interaction between people and spaces within the hub. A number of shared facilities are intended for a range of activities, including performances, exhibitions and markets.

Programming will include local and international exhibitions of modern and contemporary art as well as theater and educational events for all ages.

The venue is expected to open in mid-2019. Organizations set to move into the venue will be announced in the spring.
