As models sashayed down the runway in visually striking white and gold Anita Dongre ensembles amid the lush forest backdrop and bright gold lights, Bandra Fort turned into an exotic locale overnight. The designer showcased her collection titled Alchemy at Lakme Fashion Week 2017 and made it even more whimsical by finding her muse in Kareena Kapoor Khan.
When News18.com asked her about the evolution of fashion both onscreen and offscreen, the designer said,“Fashion is truly ever-evolving — trends circle back years later, and this is true for both real and reel life.”
“Speaking of today, men and women are far more well-read, well-travelled and well-informed than they were before. Their fashion choices are sophisticated and stem from international influences. Sustainable, organic fabrics and handcrafted clothes hold more value, as do comfortable silhouettes,” she added.
Even though the designer is of the view that Bollywood impacts trends, she still believes that it’s the runway which first creates trends. “Fashion is dictated by society. Bollywood does dictate trends, but not for everyone—Bollywood followers are certainly influenced, but the modern contemporary woman is influenced by what’s shown on the runway and by major fashion brands and global trends. The runway creates fashion trends, and Bollywood acts as a catalyst”.
She has no qualms in accepting that celebrities are under scrutiny round the clock and their responsibility towards fans is what makes them take the trouble of looking good always. She said, “Celebrities, whether young or old, are always under the spotlight, and it comes with great pressure to look stylish round the clock because they’re watched and commented on social media while also being emulated by their fans. Hence, they take so much trouble because, as stars, they do have a certain responsibility towards their fans.”
A lot has been said and written about Deepika and Priyanka’s recent red carpet appearances but Dongre feels “both of them are wonderful in their fashion sensibilities. They’re both making India proud in their own way—and that’s what matters.”
When it comes to designing sportsmen, the designer feels she’d love to style Virat Kohli “since his unique style matches the Anita Dongre Man personality very well”.
