A 2021 study published in the Journal of the American Podiatric Medical Association has detected 32 species of bacteria and 28 species of fungi underneath fingernails. 50 percent of them were solely bacterial, 6.3 percent were fungal, and 43.7 percent were mixed communities of bacteria and fungi. The shocking revelations made by the study have drawn widespread attention to hygiene. This space articulates the steps to be taken to keep fingernails clean. Caring for fingernails requires a combination of good hygiene, a balanced diet, and proper care of nails.

When it comes to protecting nails, a balanced diet and foods rich in biotin, vitamins A, C, D, and minerals like iron and zinc can help. People should be careful of the fact to not use more than the prescribed dosage by the doctor.

Besides a balanced diet, adequate moisture is also important to strengthen the nails. Drinking enough water helps the nails to retain moisture and stay strong. Without enough moisture, nails can become brittle and break and peel easily. Therefore, one should make it a habit to drink at least eight glasses of water daily. The consumption of water regularly is also generally advisable for maintaining sound health.

1. Using a proper nail clipper- The first step to take good care of nails is to use a nail clipper. There should be separate nail clippers for fingers and toenails. Avoid tools such as regular scissors or knives that aren’t specifically designed for cutting nails.

2. Frequency of cutting- It’s appropriate to cut the nails every six to eight weeks.

3. Moisturising- Nails should be moisturised as doing this at least once a day helps combat brittleness. As per dermatologists, creams like Vaseline, Eucerin, or Aquaphor, can help moisturise the nails.

4. Doctor’s consultation- In many cases, it is also advised to consult with the doctor about foot care.
