New Delhi: Situation in Singur took an ugly turn when a charred body of an 18-year-old woman, allegedly raped and then killed, was recovered from the field fenced off for the Tata plant.
The body of Tapasi Mallick was recovered from the controversial field sparking fresh tension with villagers and Trinamool Congress alleging that the victim was raped and burnt by men guarding the controversial land.
Signalling a fresh round of agitation, Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee, whose hunger strike entered the 15th day on Monday, called a 48-hour bandh in West Bengal from December 21 and a CBI inquiry into the matter.
Joining the Trinamool Congress, the West Bengal Congress demanded a CBI inquiry into the mysterious death.
West Bengal Pradesh Congress working president Pradip Bhattacharjee however reserved its opinion on the Trinamool Congress-sponsored 48-hour bandh.
Singur activists accused the police of passing it off as a suicide while Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee ordered a CID probe into the death.
West Bengal Home Secretary P R Roy said in Kolkata that the Chief Minister has ordered a CID inquiry to ascertain if the woman was tortured before being killed.
The Trinamool Congress chief alleged the woman was raped and murdered and rejected the CID probe and demanded one by the CBI.
Meanwhile, a team of Tata Motors officials on Monday began survey of land at Singur in West Bengal for the company's proposed car project.
