A fact-finding team comprising 12 advocates, who visited Koodankulam on September 12, has claimed to have gathered evidence of police excesses against anti-Koodankulam Nuclear Power Plant Project (KKNPP) protestors.

The advocates said that a report in this regard would be produced before the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court and it would also be sent to the Home Secretary.

As per the report, 16 persons were injured on September 11, when police allegedly barged into several households at Koodankulam and assaulted the occupants. Further, at least 20 vehicles, including two wheelers, share autos and cars, were damaged due to police excesses, the advocates claimed.

As many as seven persons left the village after September 11, they said. The report also blamed Inspector General of South Zone Rajesh Dass for the ‘violent behaviour’ of police.

“It is understood that there was no protest in Koodankulam village on September 11. But, police barged into several households, vandalised the belongings of the villagers and assaulted them at the behest of IG Rajesh Dass, apart from illegally arresting the villagers without any reason,” the report stated.

The report has also put forth recommendations to be immediately implemented in Koodankulam. “The police force deployed in Koodankulam should be withdrawn and the curfew lifted. A probe should be conducted by the Judicial Magistrate into the atrocities of police,” urged the advocates.
