Fearing that Crime Branch would whisk the thief away and take credit for the arrest, cops kept him locked in a loo

Mumbai: The tussle for one-upmanship between the local police and the Crime Branch sleuths is a legendary tale.

An incident at the Goregaon police station yesterday added another take to a list of stories shared at the chai tapri.

It so happened that the Crime Branch Unit XI heard that a suspect accused of killing Angara Pujari, store-owner in Goregaon, was apprehended by the Goregaon police.

A team of sleuths landed up at the police station seeking to interrogate the accused.

However, according to a police officer of Goregaon police station, the accused was brought to the police station and immediately locked up in the bathroom of the senior police inspector, Surendra Paitankar.

In fact, even Paitankar was not aware of the suspect's presence in his bathroom.

Confused and irked, the Crime Branch sleuths left the police station, but did not leave hope of questioning the suspect.

The matter was sorted only when Additional Commissioner of Police Devan Bharti came to Goregaon police station and questioned the suspect on Saturday evening.

The Crime Branch Unit followed him and were able to interrogate the accused. Raju Kasbe, police inspector of the Goregaon police station refused to comment on the issue.

The murder

Angara Pujari's murder was outsourced to Mukesh Sharma alias Shabbir alias Nurul Islam Suleman from Uttar Pradesh. Not even in his dreams would Sharma have thought that he would be locked up inside the bathroom of a police station. The Goregaon police had picked up Sharma after a local resident provided vital input to his hideout.
