Kolkata: A worker at the Northbrook jute mill allegedly commits suicide by jumping on the tracks. Amit Chand Gupta, a worker with the mill for 15 years, was apparently depressed after the closure of the mill earlier this month.

The mill was shut after the murder of its CEO SK Maheshwari on June 15. The family says that after the shutdown they could barely make ends meet leading Gupta to take such a drastic step.

Angry workers had pelted stones and beaten the CEO with iron rods reportedly over a labour dispute in Hooghly.

For the workers battling rising inflation, fewer days of work means less wages. Filthy quarters, erratic electricity and the threat of closure have made tensions between them and the management even worse.
