WB for CBI probe into Singur death
The WB government says it will seek CBI inquiry into the death of Tapasi Malik at the Tata Motors' site in Singur.

New Delhi: West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee on Tuesday announced that the state government would seek a CBI inquiry into the unnatural death of 18-year old Tapasi Malik at the Tata Motors' site in Singur.

Bhattacharjee said that although the CID had been asked for a probe, the state government also wanted a CBI probe into the matter. He said that he had already talked to the Home Secretary in New Delhi in this regard.

The situation in Singur had taken an ugly turn on Monday when the body of a young woman - who was allegedly raped and then killed - was recovered from the field fenced off for the Tata plant.

The recovery of the dead body sparked fresh protests in the area that has already been the site of tension for the last few weeks with farmers in Singur protesting against the state goverment's decision to hand over the land to Tata for their car project.

The Trinamool Congress (TC) has alleged that it was the men guarding the fenced field who had raped and killed the young girl. Singur activists have also accused the police of passing off 'the brutal rape and murder' as a suicide.

Signalling a fresh round of agitation, TC chief Mamata Banerjee, whose hunger strike entered the 15th day on Monday, called a 48-hour state-wide bandh from December 21.

Meanwhile, Bhattacharjee has urged Banerjee to call off the 48-hour strike as well as her hunger-strike.

Banerjee on her part is not backing down and has given the state government 24 hours time to stop the land acquisition in Singur. She said that if the government met her demands then the 48-hour general strike would also be called off.
