NEWDELHI: Leaving no room for any confusion regarding the role played by V S Achuthanandan in the state election, the CPM leadership has clearly named the former chief minister as the main architect behind the LDF's remarkable performance, in its Election Review Report. The report, adopted by the Central committee in its Hyderabad meeting, says that the issues of corruption which were taken up by V S Achuthanandan as the chief minister and his campaign on an anti-corruption platform drew widespread support among the people and it found reflection in the big popular response to his election campaign. While the name of former Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadev Bhattacharjee is nowhere in the report, the CC report also mentions, rather unusually, about the corruption issues raked up by VS as a contributory factor for its good performance.''In Kerala, months before the election, the issue of corruption came to the fore with the sentencing to jail of a former UDF minister by the Supreme Court for corruption. The ice cream parlour sexual abuse case involving another former minister was also revived by new revelations,'' the report states.Mentioning the popularity of the VS led government, the CC states that there was no antincumbency feelings among the people.''The record of the LDF Government with propeople development and comprehensive social welfare measures found appreciation among the people,'' it states. But there is some consolation for the party organisation too.According to the CC report, organisational work put in by the party in preparation for the elections has also helped in mobilising support for the LDF."The party also worked unitedly and there were no controversies on any issue unlike at the time of the Lok Sabha polls,'' the report states as a passing reference. The CC report attributes the victory of the UDF largely to the support it got from various caste and religious organisations."The Nair Service Society, which claimed it was equidistant from both fronts, actually worked against the LDF. The SNDP also worked by and large in favour of the UDF candidates,'' says the report. The report, however, says that there had been not much antiLeft feelings among the Christian community this time unlike Parliament elections. But it mentions the Muslim consolidation in favour of the IUML, which worked against the LDF.The CC has called for an 'indepth examination' of the reasons for losing certain seats narrowly.Citing the organisational shortcomings reported in the review report of the state committee, the CC says that the basic form of activities to keep in touch with the people and hearing their views should be revived. It has also pulled up the state party leadership for not putting up more women candidates."There should be no excuse for such neglect in the future,'' it has warned.According to the CC report, the root of factionalism in Kerala was traced to the 'disease of parliamentarianism' in the state committee report.Maintaining that such manifestations of parliamentary opportunism should be countered, the CC has said that the rectification campaign in this regard should be pursued.Regarding the failure in West Bengal, the CC report admits that the Nandigram events and the subsequent police firing alienated sections of the intelligentsia and the middle classes.''The image of the party amongst the people has been dented by manifestations of highhandedness, bureaucratism and refusal to hear the views of the people."The existence of corruption and wrongdoing among a small strata of party leaders and cadre owing to the corrosive influence of being a 'ruling party' and running the government for a prolonged period was also resented by the people."All these have affected the party in the elections,'' it states.
