New Delhi: AIIMS Director P Venugopal on Thursday added another twist to the ongoing tussle between him and the Union Health Ministry, when he sacked health ministry-backed Registrar V P Gupta.
Gupta, who had earlier been transferred to a rural health centre of AIIMS in Ballabhgarh in Haryana, was handed over an order signed by Venugopal stating that his appointment "has come to an end on February 25, 2007."
The AIIMS administration claimed that the post of the registrar was a temporary one with extensions being granted on an year-to-year basis.
"This temporary post (of Registrar) has not been extended after February 25, 2007. His temporary appointment to the temporary post of registrar has come to an end on February 25, 2007 by efflux of time," the order terminating Gupta's services said.
The letter was delivered to the residence of Gupta on the evening of March 6, 2007.
When contacted, Gupta claimed that the post of the registrar was not temporary. "It has been a regular post since 1964," he said, adding that he has written to AIIMS president Anbumani Ramadoss, apprising him of the developments.
Gupta had been transferred to the rural health centre in Ballabhgarh last year after a vigilance inquiry by the AIIMS administration found him to be "under-qualified and misusing his post." Gupta had approached Ramadoss, who had duly rescinded the AIIMS order.
Gupta had been prevented from entering his office on several occasions and the matter had even reached the police.
