New Delhi: Former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee underwent an MRI scan at AIIMS on Monday.
"He came to the hospital on Sunday. An MRI scan was conducted on his spine. I don't have the findings of the scan," AIIMS Medical Superintendent, D K Sharma, was quoted as PTI by saying.
An aide of Vajpayee said he had gone to the hospital for a "routine check-up" and that he was also undergoing physiotherapy, which he has needed ever since his knee-replacement surgery.
According to PTI, the BJP leader is suffering from spinal arthritis or osteoarthritis, an irreversible degeneration of crtical joints caused by loss of cartilage that envelopes bone-ends to allow friction-free movement.
PTI quoted an AIIMS doctor as saying that spinal arthritis is one of the common causes of back pain among the older generation. Patients who undergo knee-replacement surgery usually find themselves affected with spinal arthritis, he said.
"It is an expected problem among people who undergo knee-replacement problem. In this disease the spine, knee and thumb joints are affected," he added.
