Describing the Narendra Modi government's first budget as historic and development- oriented, Uttarakhand BJP on Thursday called it useful for the state.

"Through this budget, an effort has been made to turn promises made by Modi in his nearly 5,000 pre-election meetings to different sections of society into a reality," state BJP chief Tirath Singh Rawat said.

Calling it especially useful for Uttarakhand, Rawat said the budget makes an allocation of Rs 100 crore for setting up a centre for Himalayan studies in the hill state.

The provision of Rs 37,580 crore for highways in the budget will also be beneficial for the state where work on highway projects stalled for the past ten years will resume, he said.

Meanwhile, Uttarakhand Chief Minister Harish Rawat criticised the general budget terming it as highly disappointing for the hill state.

"Uttarakhand's twin demands for a green bonus and an additional financial assistance for the calamity-hit areas have been ignored," the Chief Minister who is being treated for a neck injury at AIIMS, Delhi said in a statement.

"People of the state expected a lot from the budget but they have been let down," he said.

Rawat had written to Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley recently demanding a green bonus of Rs 2,000 crore for the state and an additional financial assistance of Rs 4,000 crore for reconstruction work in flashflood-affected areas of the state.

Pradesh Congress Committee president Kishore Upadhyay also criticised the budget terming it as "anti-Uttarakhand".
