KOCHI: With Christmas and New Year around the corner, the tourist spots in and around Kochi, especially places in the coastal belt, are under the grip of a festive mood. ‘Utsavam 2011-12’, a festival of traditional art forms organised by the District Tourism Promotion Council (DTPC) in association with Kumbalangi Model Tourism Development Society (KMTDS), is gaining popularity among the tourists.Cherai beach, Suvarna Theeram Muziris beach at Munambam, Vasco da Gama Square in Fort Kochi and Kumbalangi model tourism village are the different venues for the various programmes organised as part of ‘Utsavam 2011-12.’ These programmes are showcased every Sunday at 5 pm and will continue to be held till February 26. The KMTDS is organising the programme. “Apart from presenting our cultural diversity before the foreign and domestic tourists, the festival would fetch a handsome income for the artistes. Most of our traditional art forms are facing extinction due to various reasons. Lack of a good platform is one of the major reasons. These types of festivals will be helpful to a great extent to solve this problem,” said Shaji Kuruppassery, KMTDS secretary. In total, twenty seven different art forms are being presented at the four venues. Gadhika, Koodiyattam, Sangam Kali, Nadaan Vadyam, Poothanum Thirayum, Velichappadu Thullal, Kalamezhuthu, Sarpam Pattu, Kanyarkali Theyyam and Padayani are some of them.On the other hand, to add more colours to the festive season, various programmes and competitions are organised as part of the ongoing Cochin Carnival. Excise Minister K Babu inaugurated the festival at Fort Kochi on December 18.
