COIMBATORE: Cracking the whip on land grabbers during the previous DMK regime, the police have arrested two DMK functionaries in two different land grab and cheating cases at Salem and Coimbatore. Meanwhile, the Tirupur police registered a case against Udumalpet municipal chairman Velusamy for allegedly usurping about 85 per cent shares of a paper mill by forging documents when the owner was abroad. He is yet to be arrested. Son of former DMK MLA G Elango and Coimbatore District Panchayat vicepresident E Anandan, 42, was arrested by the police on Monday for allegedly cheating the public by promising to sell land under the installment scheme. "He is running a real estate firm called Green Home Land Scape Ltd from 2001 and had promised land to many people. When the customers fully paid the installments, he refused to transfer the ownership of the land to them and threatened them using his political influence. However, the land he showed to them does not belong to him," said Assistant Commissioner of Police M Selvarajan. Sources said several persons have been cheated by him and they are receiving more complaints after his arrest. "We suspect that he was involved in several land grab cases and will be investigating them," said a police source.
Meanwhile, the Salem police arrested a DMK councillor, Auto Manickam, on Tuesday after complaints that he had usurped over 4,500 square feet land from two persons at Thathampatti Main Road, Salem. According to police, Manickam staked claim to 59yearold Padmavathi's land by forging a power of attorney document and sold the land to a person called Raja in 1998.Manickam also allegedly encroached the land belonging to a woman called Suseela. "We are receiving a number of complaints. In the West Zone, we have identified 372 notorious land grabbers of whom 90 per cent are politically influential," said Vanniaperumal, IGP (west zone).
