New Delhi: India should have an alert system for tsunamis and cyclones in place by next year, giving those who live along the coast at least a 20-minute warning before waves strike, Science and Technology Minister Kapil Sibal said on Monday.
The Government is importing 50 weather radars for the project after Indian-developed radars were found to be ineffective, Sibal said in the Rajya Sabha.
Sibal said the technology would allow officials to know whether waves are going to strike the coast 20 to 30 minutes before actual impact.
“Four such radars have already been installed,” he said.
More than 10,700 were killed in India in the Dec. 26, 2004 tsunami. At least 5,640 people are still missing and presumed dead.
