A crucial meeting of the All India Motor Transport Congress (AIMTC) in Mumbai on Tuesday will decide on whether truckers across the country would go on an indefinite strike to protest the recent diesel price hike.
After the price hike was announced last Thursday, the AIMTC declared that starting September 18, they would go on an indefinite strike to protest the move and that a formal announcement in this regard would be made on September 17.
However, later, the association’s managing committee deferred its meeting by another day.
“A decision on the indefinite strike will be taken at Tuesday’s meeting. We may go off the roads from Thursday,” according to AIMTC’s south zone vice president N P Velu, also the Tiruchengode Lorry Owners Association president.
However, informed sources revealed that a section of the AIMTC’s top brass was apprehensive of opting for an indefinite strike, owing to bitter experiences in the past.
AIMTC president Bal Malkit Singh said that a “collective decision” on the issue would be taken after eliciting views of all the members of the managing committee.
All the pros and cons would be discussed, he told Express over phone.
Services to Kerala Suspended
Meanwhile, a truckers’ strike in Kerala has affected the transportation of goods to the State from Tamil Nadu. “Movement of goods to Kerala has been hit by the strike as most of the truck operators from TN have suspended service to the neighbouring State,” State Federation of Lorry Owners Associations- Tamilnadu (SFLOA-TN) president K Nallathampi said.
Around 18,000 lorries ferried goods to Kerala, which is dependent on TN for most essential commodities, on a daily basis, he pointed out.
