BELGAUM: Though agitations led by Siddhaling Swamiji of Tontadarya Mutt against the proposed Posco in neighbouring Gadag district has drawn nationwide attention after activist Medha Patkar's visit, Swamijis of the district are still silent over the issue.
Express found that most of them are waiting for a call from Siddhaling Swamiji. "We condemn forcible land acquisition and if we receive an invitation from Tontadarya Swamiji, we will definitely participate in the protest," said Siddharam Swamiji of Rudrakshi Mutt, at Naganur in Belgaum.Prabhu Channabasava Swamiji of Motgi Mutt Athani said that no government can go against the farmers.
He said the Gadag agitation against the land acquisition for the Posco project will end soon and the final decision will be in favour of the farmers. If it continues, I will go to Gadag and take part in the movement along with the farmers, he added.He opined that none can shake the backbone (farmers) of the country. "Agriculture is the food treasury. Acquisition of fertile land for industrial purpose is a major sin," he opined.MYSORE: Social activist Medha Patkar called upon the youths to fight corruption and looting of natural resources.Terming the NICE project as a threat to environment she said that acquiring agricultural land for the project was the greatest loss to the farmers. She said the number of land owners has crossed the number of farmers whose main source of daily bread was agriculture. It is unfortunate that ecology is being destroyed in the guise of development, she added. She warned that there would be scarcity of food across the globe by the year 2030 and organic farming would attract more farmers.
