KOCHI: Prolonged power cuts are not new in Kerala. With the arrival of the monsoon, complaints at the electricity board are increasing considerably. It has become difficult to attend the complaints due to shortage of staff in the city. It is difficult to convince agitated consumers who become very aggressive sometimes, said district secretary, Kerala Electricity Workers Federation, K C Mani. The number of staff is not sufficient to deal with the cases. As the use of electricity has increased considerably, it has become essential for the electricity board to restore power supply at the shortest possible time.It is unfortunate that the Trouble Call Management System (TCMS) is no longer in existence.A solution to the problem was found a few years back with the introduction of TCMS in Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Kottayam, Kochi and Kozhikode as part of the initiative to offer better customer service. But the system was done away with last year with the introduction of the Model Section in a bid to improve the efficiency some months ago, he said. Little do the general public know about closure of the system as they continue to call up the emergency number to register their complaints, he said. Under the Model Section Board, separate functional groups have been set up for attending capital and maintenance works, break down and also revenue-related aspects in the electrical section offices. It has been implemented in all the electrical sections in Kerala. Though the round-the-clock service register the complaint of the consumers, the responsibility of taking up the repair work falls on the KSEB workers. He said that banking on contract workers for heavy works has helped a lot in reducing the work load. Fixing posts, conductors, transformers and other work are assigned to the contractors, he said. Still the minor works like filling of transformer oil are done by the KSEB workers. The KSEB workers are eagerly looking forward to the commissioning of the city automation project, he said.
